LITTLE, BROWN; JOHN MURRAY | 1870, 1872 | PDF | 1124+1423 PAGES | ENGLISH |279.75 MB

First published in 1854. The latest in a series of classical dictionaries created under the editorship of the English scientist William Smith (1813-1893). According to Smith, in the Preface, "Dictionary of Geography ... created in the first place to illustrate the Greek and Roman writers, a diligent allowing students to read their most productive way." The book lives up to its description: the two massive volumes of the dictionary provided a detailed description of all important countries, regions, cities, geographical features, which are found in Greek and Roman literature, not forgetting those who are mentioned only in the Bible. The dictionary was reissued most recently in 2005.
